KATHAK

Kathak is a beautiful dance form originated from the temples of north india .Kathakar means  a STORYTELLER . Footwork and hand movements are of great importance in kathak.From the 16th century onwards it absorbed certain features of Persian dance  and Central Asian dance which were imported by the royal courts of the Mughal era.
The name Kathak is derived from the sanskrit  word' katha' meaning story, and katthaka in Sanskrit means he who tells a story, or to do with stories
All the steps and movements ends with the final beat called sum and all the steps and movements have a rhymic words called bols. the steps and movements together formes tukras . the main tukras and the popular tukras are of chakkrawala tukras which contains a lot o spins. The spins are usually done heels. Shri Birju maharaj is one of the great kathakar and has introduce many choreographies in kathak.
